A campsite has been created on the east side of Waldo Rd, just across from the Evangelical Childrens Services building (which is just east of the NE 5th Ave. intersection). This is right behind the public bench at the side of the rail trail, so it is probably on pubic land.

The sidewalk on the south side of NE 4th Avenue, between NE 5th St. and NE Blvd, is especially slippery after rain because it has a downslope going east. The "slime" of green and black algae on the sidewalk makes for hazardous conditions for pedestrians when rain has caused it to get wet. Could it be power washed, please?

For several weeks, this collection of trash has been located in front of a billboard at the edge of a sidewalk, about 50 yds south of Sonny's on Waldo Road. From the shape of the pile, it's possible that someone is living inside it. Since it is not in front of a business or residence, no one seems to be disposing of it. It's hard to say whether it is on public or private property--or both.

Mac's Drive-in at 129 NW 10th Ave. at N. Main has noontime business that creates a blockage of 10th Avenue because there is always a line of cars whose drivers are trying to turn into Mac's but can't because of the length of the line. Today, 10th Avenue was backed up to the light at N. Main St. so that people trying to turn west from Main onto 10th Ave. could not fit behind the cars backed up from the drive-in. I do sympathize with business owners who rely on drive-in business, but this has been going on for YEARS and is now worse because of the extra demand for pick-up of hamburgers, etc. Customers are literally blocking a thoroughfare so they can use it as turn lanes to get into Mac's.

A year or so ago, the street sign at the intersection of NE 7th St. and 5th Avenue was replaced with a standard, green sign. However, the original sign, which was black, included both the current street designation as well as the HISTORIC names of the streets, i.e., Roper Ave. and Seminary St., respectively. Most street signs in the NE Historic District do include both old and new names. Is it possible the old sign is still around [why wasn't it reused?], or could a new one be installed? This intersection is most definitely in the district.

The SE corner of NE 39th Ave and Waldo Rd has become quite unsightly again since people hang out there and leave trash behind. In general, the Waldo rail/trail is frequently becoming littered with discarded clothing, food wrappers and styrofoam containers, etc. I wondered if there is still a schedule of trash pickup in this area as there has been in the past?

I first reported this campsite just south of the E. University Ave. crossing of the Sweetwater Branch a full month ago. Nothing has changed. The man living there is making the site (which is directly alongside of the creek on the east side) increasingly large and permanent-looking. I have seen him wading in the creek, and this morning, there appeared to be soap suds along the edge. Is this really what we want between the HQ library and the Matheson Museum, let alone directly alongside a body of water?

There is a fellow camping (sleeping bag, laundry line, etc) between the headquarters library and the Matheson Museum, on the east edge of Sweetwater Branch where it emerges under E. University Ave. when I walked by, he was wading barefooted in the creek. I’m guessing this sort of camping downtown on the waterway is probably not encouraged?

Especially since the efforts to close Dignity Village plus the end of prison labor to pick up trash, the Waldo Rd bike & walking path is becoming increasingly trashy. This is especially true of the east side of the trail from NE 39th Ave south to E. University Ave.
I know the City landscape man tries to pick up one section, but I really wonder why there can’t be a Community Service expectation of the residents at Grace Marketplace? Why can’t able bodied residents be expected to do litter pickup in exchange for vouchers for meals? If they’re strong enough to panhandle in intersections, aren’t they capable of working an hour a day in service to the community?

Almost directly east and across Waldo Rd from the rear of the Natures Own Bakery Outlet is a heavily used footpath that crosses east from the paved rail-trail, across the ditch, and goes up the power line cut. The ditch is increasingly litter-strewn, and there are indications that this area is being used for homeless campsites. In general, the entire wooded land from this point north up to NE 39th Avenue is showing signs of increased littering and overnight "bedding" --perhaps due to the changing policies of Grace Marketplace and Dignity Village. Unless the city wants this to become another mess like the one that existed off the Hawthorne Trail some years ago, the owners of this property [city? UF?] really need to be alerted to the trashy conditions that exist. The rail-trail is heavily used by many people, and having eyesores like this is not good for East Gainesville, nor for the Waldo Road corridor which is on display to people in thousands of vehicles every day.

The vacant lot immediately north of the Evangelical Children's Services building is being occupied by a construction trailer, at least two trucks, and a car parked in front (For Sale, jammed with belongings, and without a license plate). The chain link fence across the frontage of the lot was partially taken apart to allow the parking of these vehicles. Is this lot owned by the company using it for this purpose? It seems to be a convenient place for anyone to park whatever they want.

For a couple of weeks there has been a large SUV bumper--undoubtedly left over from an accident--near the bench on the NE corner of the intersection at NE 12th Ave. and Waldo Rd (for the Walmart). Since it is adjacent to the rail-trail, it is probably on city owned property (?).

Twice in the past few days, this "camp" has been seen immediately south of the main Tacachale entrance driveway off Waldo Road at NE 16th Ave. Several men seem to be adding chairs, bikes, carts, hammocks, and tarps to the camp, and they hang out in the bus stop shelter at the Tacachale entrance. Is it possible this a by-product of the announced closing of Dignity Village in the near future? Is this land "public" and therefore acceptable for camps?

Trash is accumulating on the Waldo Rd rail trail, and the emptying of trash cans does not seem to keep ahead of it. Has a compromise been reached so that prison inmates can go back to doing the great job they did of keeping this route picked up?--or is this a matter of too much work for city employees? There seems to have been a considerable uptick in trash along the NE 8th Ave thru NE 39th Ave. & Waldo Rd corridor lately.

Storm debris and runoff from streets & parking lots has gradually accumulated in the duck pond again. Will the City please schedule a cleanup for the pond? Residents try to scoop out items with pool skimmers, but the height of the birm makes this difficult and rather unsafe.
