Wall Triana will be opened tomorrow. That will reduce the pressure on the intersection of Balch and Gillespie. A lot of Wall Triana detour traffic used Gillespie.

Morning and afternoon rush hour traffic still backs up at least several cars in each of the directions. A simple timed stoplight would do wonders at this intersection. It could be set to blink red as it does presently, during the night.

It has improved since W-T reopened, but still could use help during busy times. Obviously a roundabout would be ideal, but I don't see Madison residents accepting that particularly quickly. Is this intersection not likely to get much worse again once roadworks begin on 72?

We are doing a warrant analysis on that intersection and will report the results. Even if it warrants a signal, the standards do not require a signal to be installed. There are at least 8 other intersections in Madison that meet warrant conditions for a signal and have greater traffic volumes. Funding will always be limited and signals will be prioritized based on traffic volume and accident history.

Thank you for the update. It's encouraging to know the intersection will at least be evaluated. It is however, distressing to hear that one of the parameters used to determine priority for funding is the number of accidents. Just wondering ... any bonus points for serious injuries or deaths when counting accidents?

Accident history is one of the eight warrant considerations, as it should be. Most requests for a signal evolve around driver convenience and our emphasis is safety and traffic flow. We changed that intersection from a 2-way to a 4-way stop, in 2009, to stop a high level of accidents at that intersection. We will let your know the warrant results.

We have completed the warrant analysis of this intersection and it meets one out of eight conditions to warrant a signal. We do not recommend an intersection to be signalized unless it meets at least two of the warrant conditions. This particular intersection should not be signalized unless the intersection can be widened to provide left turn lanes, which would be a significant increase in construction costs. Without left turn lanes, green cycle times could be excessive due to left turns holding traffic until turns can be made. Under these conditions, signals often hold traffic as much as a 4-way stop.

Thank you for taking the time and investing in the study, and for providing the rationale to leave the intersection as is. Nevertheless, eventually someone is going to get hurt there as people jockey for right of way.

Nothing on the hughes/hidden valley intersection yet. It is a hazard especially when the u-hire a sheriff is out there directing traffic on church days at Crosspointe. Someones gonna get seriously hurt and I hope they sue Madison because according to my council man the warrant has been done and no signal yet.

The intersection of Hughes Road and Hidden Valley Way does meet two of the warrant conditions but the fact a signal meets warrant conditions does not require the signal be installed. There is no warrant condition that "requires" a signal to be installed at any intersection. I will be recommending a no u-turn at that median to help remove some of the confusion at that intersection. The deputy directing traffic for the church does help handle the church peak traffic load.

the deputy is a hazard. People come over the ridge at a high rate of speed and the deputy is at the bottom of the hill trying to direct traffic. First of all why is he there? There is no requirement for him to be there and the chruch folks can obey the traffic laws like everyone else. The U-Turn was brought up several months ago and the city decided that they could go against state law.

I opened this issue to address the need for a traffic signal on the corner of Balch and Gillespie. The city has determined a signal is not yet warranted, and while I disagree, the matter is closed. If someone wishes to address an issue with regard to the hughes/hidden valley intersection please do so with a separate issue.
