A gym came into the old Terry's Pizza area after Terry's lease was not renewed. Supposedly, that was why the landowner did not renew the Terry's lease, but the gym did not stay long. Some of that shopping center has been vacant for years and years.

Agree but would sure like to see some of those vacant buildings used -- they are an eyesore!

The Shopping Center owner is Aronov out of Montgomery...they have made little attempts over the years to even maintain the Shopping Center much less try and find any retail stores. Updates were done when the City of Huntsville posted condemnation notices a few years ago. The roof had collapsed on the old Otasco (now Burkes outlet). The city needs to make this area part of a Tax District.....if they can call an area next to Research Park a blighted area that is undeveloped farm land in order to build a Target Shopping Center, then this should qualify!

I hope it is true that something is in the works, but in the 12 years that we have lived a block from Haysland Square, we certainly have seen no evidence of it. For the most part, all we have seen is businesses departing, not moving in. Some, as one person has said, were actually forced out to make room for a gym that never got as far as actually opening their doors but the damage to the other businesses was already done of course. Most recently, Auto Zone built a new building farther down the Parkway and left yet another empty building in Haysland Square. With the exception of Staples and Home Depot, the only kind of businesses that are moving in are discount stores, check cashing businesses and nail salons. We really need some high end tenants that can revitalize this area and attract others. I would have thought there would be some sort of law or ordinance that would govern how long commercial real estate is allowed to sit empty. While one understands that this process cannot happen overnight, after many, many years, it seems obvious that no serious attempts have been made to find suitable tenants or, as has also been said, to even maintain the property. Perhaps some sort of tax incentive or other stimulus might attract tenants to these buildings. We need to find an answer though, not just for Hamilton and Haysland Square. This is happening all over Huntsville. Old buildings are vacated and rather than a new business moving in, they just build a new structure. This cycle cannot continue in Huntsville without grave consequences to our property values and the reputation and beauty of our city.
