Description

The pedestrian phase to cross Broadway at piedmont ave is shared with drivers turning left onto piedmont ave from southbound broadway. Today I witnessed 3 drivers each fail to yield to 2 people who were crossing in the crosswalk.

Please add an exclusive left turn phase for turning drivers to remove this conflict. Until this phase can be added, please prioritize the safety of people crossing the street and restrict drivers from making this turn.

As a driver this is a very challenging movement to perform safely. One must maintain awareness of two through lanes, one bicycle lane, and one right turn lane on Broadway and anybody who is approaching the long crosswalk from both directions.

The traffic engineer who designed this intersection placed an extraordinary amount of trust in the ability of drivers to safely navigate this movement that is challenging in the best conditions and downright hazardous on a dark rainy night.

Given that drivers in oakland are far, far away from the mythical perfect driver this intersection design is a dangerous and will lead to somebody being hurt or killed.
