  I agree. As a pedestrian, people turning left (going southbound on Shelburne Road) try to beat northbound traffic and almost hit pedestrians all the time. Also, the walk signal buttons ARE STILL BROKEN.

  Of course this is the case. It is because the streets were not built to handle the outrageous levels of traffic volume that Pine, Flynn and Home Ave receive. The city and state traffic study shows these streets receive an F grade (A,B,C,D,F scale) regarding capacity to handle current traffic volumes. That is why the Southern Connector/Champlain Parkway has been necessary for decades and the state/city know it. And yet we still wait, braving dangerous roads and intersections, being subjected to toxic levels of noise and air pollution.

  Being on foot at this intersection is terrible. Sometimes cycles through up to 3x before we get a walk sign. Buttons broken?

  Two mentions were made of buttons not working. Please see how this was answered in SCF #7256145.

  A mention was made of the Champlain Parkway. Learned of the site champlainparkway.com yesterday and understand the site was recently updated. Perhaps some project updates and new information can be found there.

  Do not have a quick answer for southbound left turns into the parking lot. When upgrading the signal in 2006, a decision had to be made whether to add a left turn signal for that direction or not. Definitely not as busy as the other direction, and we did not want to encourage cut-through traffic in the parking lot. Chose to leave it in its existing configuration. Have an idea that might work, a protected-only SBLT. It would need a loop and some dirt work to get the wires where they need to go. Call it a mini capital project. As a potential problem solver this will remain on the short list.

  For the original comment of the green light coming on "too quickly," this is a case of blatant red light running. Clearance intervals allow for a legal change in right of way. There is no way for signal equipment to predict, respond, and protect against people illegally running the red light. There is no technical quick-fix or long-term capital upgrade that can answer this human factor problem, at least as far as the signal equipment itself goes.

  We are approached all the time by vendors with new products for traffic calming. Not aware of anything specifically applicable for this type of problem yet. A product meant for something else might have merit for this case. We will be watching and keeping this in mind.

  With a broader and longer term view the road usage here might change, presenting an improvement that signal equipment alone cannot provide. When the Champlain Parkway opens it is expected to divert a lot of traffic from Shelburne Road, maybe calming things down a little and contributing to less red light running and speeding. Hopefully a net improvement.

  Going to reclassify this as a Transportation and Parking Improvement Request to capture the SBLT change request.
