I would suggest compliance with ADA requirements, imposed by federal law, which require provision of an accessible detour. The grass is fine unless it’s wet out (which is obviously just an inconvenience) or you’re pushing a stroller or using a wheelchair.
Place the signs at the closest intersection, and install a temporary alternative route through the adjacent parking lots with barricades protecting pedestrians from cars.

In this SPECIFIC instance the only alternative is to install a temporary walkway in the street and provide concrete barrier between traffic and walkway. That would add thousands of dollars the project cost.
