You can legally idle a vehicle for 3 minutes in Burlington, 5 minutes statewide, and "This provision shall not apply in any situation in which the health or safety of a driver or passenger requires the idling of the vehicle, including, but not limited to, when idling is necessary to operate safety equipment such as windshield defrosters, and operation of the equipment is needed to address specific safety concerns."
The solution to this problem is not issuing fines to people, the problem needs to be fixed by the city of Burlington and the school working together to figure out a better plan for pick up and drop off that does not create traffic problems in the neighborhood. A staffed pick up and drop off area could be a big help here. This is a problem that THE CITY needs to fix, and has largely recused themselves from providing any kind of solution so that they can issue tickets to well meaning residents. This is not solely a problem of people doing something wrong/illegal. The city is being lazy about this and people are taking the brunt of it when parking enforcement gets involved. Enough is enough. I want to see action from the city to help alleviate this problem, not just fine people for being caught up in the problem.
There is no parking allowed on the west side of walnut st. All of the cars on the west side (far side in the photo) are parked illegally. Idling was for more than 3 minutes - illegal by city ordinance.
