This was all redesigned many years ago and the crosswalk at Ponce Place was removed. There is already a crosswalk and redlight at Lamont for crossing for the school. You just have to walk up half a block. Adding a redlight at Ponce would create a massive cut through for a street that is already heavily traveled (new apartments at Ponce added a lot of traffic). Cant put redlight at every intersection — I.e. what about Garden Lane, Lamont.

@sod0494 thank you for your comment. what do you propose can be done to make this intersection less than a block away from a public school and three nearby churches everyday safer? The fact is pedestrians and car drivers will make dangerous decisions when roads are not designed with safety in mind for drivers, pedestrians, and bicyclists.

Clairemont is the issue. It should be redesigned from Scott blvd to courthouse to minimize speed and provide for bike and pedestrian traffic. Reduce from 4 lanes to 2 with bike lanes and bigger sidewalks for pedertrian traffic.

As for now, there is very clear pedestrian crossing at the redlight at Wilton if you only obey the law.

People, whether they are in cars or walking, will break the law if there are not safety measures in place to make intersections as safe as possible. Ponce de Leon place and Clairemont is an example of this.

Additionally, the crosswalk near Wilton is often less safe because cars run through the walk signal. It’s confusing for cars because they do not realize that they must stop because they just went through the Michigan/Wilton/Clairemont intersection. This is very bad design. I am very fearful of the day a child sees the walk signal near Wilton, walks out in the street and is hit by a car that does not notice there is a walk signal there.

Thank you for the comments. Currently we are evaluating the traffic signal operation for the intersection of Clairemont Avenue and Michigan/Wilton. The preferred location for a pedestrian crossing Clairemont Avenue is at this intersection. Instead of trying to make a left from Ponce de Leon Place, would it help to make your left turn by using the traffic light at Wilton and Clairemont Avenue? We will continue to seek ways to improve the traffic signals and pedestrian ways.
