This is a recurring problem -- would it be possible for the city to send someone to the administration of IAA so that the admin can make an announcement to the community concerning where they may and may not park during dropoff?
There needs to be some kind of community-building approach to finding a solution here. The last time I commented on this issue, I was quickly told off by an IAA parent who is sick of 1) being ticketed during school drop off and 2) obstructionist residents who won't quietly let go of the No Parking areas surrounding IAA.
I, and others, have spoken with the school principal - he knows parking and traffic congestion is an issue & the school has made an effort to communicate with families around appropriate pick-up/drop-off areas. They are also facing many real challenges with students coming from all over town due to school-choice, the District's decision to stop offering free bus passes to Burlington students, parents' perception that bussing/walking is not a safe option, the lack of safe bike and walk infrastructure, the list goes on...
Simply allowing folks to park where it is currently marked No Parking would not address this problem - they're already parking there. The current situation is a problem - not simply because people are ignoring the signs, but because the congestion from this illegal parking creates unsafe, congested, and impassable streets.
And to have BPD follow up and state that there is no illegal parking is ignoring the underlying issue. Very similar to illegal parking in front of Flynn Elementary. This needs to be proactively addressed, not dismissed
I think the signs on the west side in the area say that there is no parking except for drop off to the school. That may be why the PD says there's no illegal parking there.
There is a marked loading/unloading area. Cars are parking both to the north and south of it so cars are unable to pass each other safely. Plus, loading/unloading is not parking for drop off, it is for deliveries. Sometimes there are illegally parked cars and a delivery happening at the same time, so the delivery vehicle is double parked since it can't get to the designated area.
This is a chronic issue, as is the parking on Spring. Parking manager needs to put this on a daily rotation at 8am, but has only sent someone out later in the day when it is no longer an issue. Ignoring this problem has only made it worse.
FYI, there is almost always legal parking available on Lafountain and St. Louis, one block away from the school. I frequently drive to IAA in the morning and never have issues finding parking within a block of the school. People have learned that they can just park wherever they want with zero consequences so there is no incentive for them to even look for legal parking spaces.
