It needs to stop. Builder get an additional 10 feet of lot coverage in the back for these 'green spaces.' That chokes out the neighbors' back yards and leaves a mess in front.
I have neighbors do not even bother to pay for over. They Park their car wherever they want right up against the front door of the house. This to he is a safety hazard. Not only that it ruins the Aesthetics of the neighborhood
Those buildings alone are an eyesore to the neighborhood, but paving over the landscaping is pretty offensive. This needs to be undone and along with that Environment should be ticketing those owners who leave the landscape but who never weed. Why is it up to us to report. They drive around all day in various neighborhoods and by August it isn't hard to see all the houses that do not pull the weeds from cracks in the sidewalk or on any part of their property visible to the street. When does that get addressed.
It's none of your business what people do with their property you don't pay their taxes so they should have every right to do what they want with their land
When these Bayonne boxes were built the developers illegally removed perfectly good trees. The vast majority put in no replacements. Now the little bit of greenery that was put in us illegally removed.
Actually it is our business, there are ordinances for us to follow otherwise the neighborhood will turn into a filthy environment and look like a ghetto. Also I pay taxes and expect my neighbors to keep their property up to par.
You sound like a liberal. You really think I'm getting upset about this but I'm not I'm just fighting for other people's right to do what they want with their property that they own.
And you really think that Paving over a little green area that otherwise would look messed up with all the weeds is going to make a big difference. How about this if you don't like it how about you move out of Jersey City. No one is forcing you to stay here and look at these so-called disgusting Bayonne boxes.
Most likely the people leaving comments on here are probably just just jealous that they can afford anything nice or anything new or most likely can't have a driveway. It's sad how determined you guys are to screw up someone else's life
There's so many areas in Jersey City that need to be fixed and you're worried about stupid small things like this you have nothing better to do with your life.
We bought a place like this that already had pavers installed in these two little spots- how do we know if that's against city ordinance? We put planter boxes there because we WANT the green space and were afraid to rip the pavers out.
The biggest issue with this is that this paved over spot is then turned into a parking space. This puts a car within inches sometimes of the front door which is blocking the means of egress. Not only is it aesthetically unpleasing especially when you're trying to gentrify and beautify a neighborhood but the blocking of the door also impedes Swift exit from the house as well as Swift entry, in the case of police or emergency personnel.
Rabelais, I'm so happy you're fighting for this. Man1989 is just probably just another crooked contractor happily doing this work for the money. That's why he keeps closing it, and other issues like it on this website. Scum like that shouldn't live or work in jersey city. Keeping fighting on!
The homeowners need to maintain these "little" green spaces, they get overrun with weeds and insects and people also throw their cigarettes and other trash in there. I for one, am glad to cover them up on front of house but I have plenty of trees and greenery in backyard where it belongs. This will trample on the rights of homeowners. This is not a HOA.
You're wrong. These 'little' spaces are given to allow additional lot coverage in the back of the property. Maintain them or lose that privilege. You're not special.
This is so ridiculous. I get the eyesore argument, but do you pay the taxes for this property? No. Did you pay the downpayment on it? No.
JC is full of people complaining about homes that they do not own. At what point will the homeowners have some sort of rights that allows them to make their own decisions?
I am sorry if MY home is an eyesore to YOU. If you want greenery, we have a public park that we ALL pay for in our taxes.
But whatever, some stupid ordnance exists --- *eye roll*. Seems like we have an ordnance for everything these days...
webbynyc, it's way beyond being an eyesore. You are well away of why these are required and what is gained by having them. If you don't care about the neighborhood, don't build in it.
JerseyCityNJRegisteredReporter - Is that a threat? I bet there is an ordnance for threatening your neighbors as well. But do what you want - this isn't my house, lol.
Rabelais - It looks fine to me. I do care about the neighborhood. That's why I am outing all of the cry babies who make demands on a homeowner but share zero responsibilities of the homeownership. That is the definition of a cry baby to me.
webbynyc, it's a blatant violation and you know it. The definition of a crybaby is one who cries when he can't do whatever he wants to do. Look in the mirror. This and all the other violators will be reported.
Rabelais - I do know it. I even said it in my initial post. Doesn't mean I need to agree with it, even if I have no choice but to follow it. Such a silly law that goes overboard in the form of regulations every which way for homeowners - the people who are supposed to "own" the property.
Webbynyc is absolutely right. What is the point of saying you own something when you can't do anything with it it's like leasing a vehicle. It's never truly yours cuz you have to follow the dealerships rules on customizing it.
Webbnyc, the idea of maintaining a small area of the front in order to be able build on a a substantial larger area in the back is pretty simple and in my opinion overly generous.
Rabelais - Maybe. But it's supposed to be MY front area. Why should you be able to tell me how to build on it? Perhaps I have a concrete fetish. Until you start paying my property taxes, I vote stay out of my design decisions.
Besides, not everyone has a backyard area to design. And even when they do - you still need permits in some cases. Ugh!
Let's be real here, the only reason the green areas are paved over is to secure a second parking space in front of the house. The result is whole sections of blocks are looking like parking lots treeless wastelands the result of someone's selfish interests. But, that said, the law is the law, the green space is required. I wonder what the fine is for non-compliance? Probably not enough. (Written by a home owner in the neighborhood proud of his front garden).
Webbnyc, then don't take the extra space in back, it's pretty simple. We live in a densely populated area and many of our actions affect others in a profound way. We don't live in a vacuum,
Citizen, violators should be fined in perpetuity, until changes are made.
Rabelais - The design choice of others doesn't affect me. I am just annoyed why it seems to bother everyone else. My house isn't meant to be pleasurable to you - but it is to me. And maybe I like my concrete. That being said, the law is the law. I've said my part.
The house in question isn't my own. I hope I haven't made their lives more difficult due to all of the tattle tails who have nothing better to do.
JerseyCityNJRegisteredReporter - Thanks, but I'm all set in that respect. I just don't like being forced to do it. :-)
I have no problem giving up any extra backyard space if it meant the front of the home can look cleaner - no maintenance. This wasnt an option I was given; in fact, we bought the home with this already done and did not even know it was against any ordiance. I am all for the law, but we need more flexibility from the city and our neighbors.

Us. You're a riot. Some of these places actually do have green in front. Weeds and garbage.
I wondered why you got so angry about this, you're one of the offenders.

That is my concern.
