I just learned that on top of everything else, tomorrow MBTA buses will be using Autumn. I assume based on that, that Main will be completely closed. So not only will the buses be coming down the road, so too will everyone else. We had a similar situation last Thursday when Main was closed. Cars following the detour traveling south on Autumn and looking to return to Main were unable to turn left onto Winter due to traffic on Winter (which typically backs up from Main well past Autumn). That caused a major backup of several blocks on Autumn. As a result, residents were basically stuck in place. It sounds like the situation is going to recur tomorrow and that it may be much worse. Is there a plan in place for an officer to direct traffic at the intersection of Autumn and Winter? Without one, there will be gridlock again.

I don't think anyone minds the work that is being done (the water line replacements are long-overdue and very important). And I think everyone understands that some inconvenience is inevitable. What I think residents are frustrated by is the lack of any plan to mitigate the issue, and the total lack of response. Even the workers at the site I spoke with this AM were themselves concerned by the lack of a detail at their location. So we're not the only ones whose concerns are being ignored.

Starting tomorrow morning (Wednesday), the detouring and lane reduction on Main Street will not begin until 9am. This will allow for the morning commute to flow as normal during that time. Once the traffic lightens up the company will continue the work and the detour will be in place. This should alleviate the majority of the issues. There is road work throughout the city and the police department is trying to fill details where necessary. There are other projects in the city that have attracted more attention than this one. Some of which are in busier intersections that require police details as well. Many people on this forum know that the city hall project is a priority due to the amount of vehicular and pedestrian traffic and have stated as much numerous times. The police are doing everything we can to provide public safety and we will continue to do so with the officers that we have. We apologize for any inconvenience that this construction project has caused and we ask residents to stay patient as living in a densely populated area like Malden at times comes with traffic related headaches.
