Thanks for reaching out to the Department of Public Works. Right now DPW is focusing on adding some new crosswalks at several points along North Ave, the first of which should be going in this year. You can follow updates on this project at this website: https://www.burlingtonvt.gov/DPW/North-Avenue-Unsignalized-Crosswalks . The Department of Public Works has resolved this request. Thanks for helping to keep Burlington a great place to live and work. Feel free to call DPW customer service at (802)863-9094, should you have any questions.
This is a request for signalized crosswalks...the project you linked refers "Unsignalized Crosswalks Project includes five new unsignalized crosswalks on North Avenue at Ward Street.."
In order to process this traffic request please call customer service at (802)863-9094 and provide your contact information so Technical Services may follow up with you.
Hi - thank you for making a recommendation for increased pedestrian safety. We do have a flashing pedestrian beacon project -- like those on Pine St -- slated for North Ave and Ward St (in addition to others further north on North Ave.) later in this construction year. Unsignalized refers to pedestrian activated traffic signals (not the flashing pedestrian beacons being requested here).
@DPW, this issue is mapped as Washington/Berry, which is not currently included in the list of approved RFB locations for North Ave. This is the approved list per the corridor study, which does not include the intersection/crosswalk this issue is about.
" Ward Street, Killarney Drive / Village Green Drive, Poirier Place, Gosse Court, and Green Acres Drive / Cayuga Court."
Thank you all for your continued interest in this intersection. This project is in our longer-term capital project list while we complete the grant-funded crosswalk additions at other locations along the North Avenue Corridor (https://www.burlingtonvt.gov/DPW/North-Avenue-Unsignalized-Crosswalks).
We recognize the importance of this issue, and its impact to you, and we will continue to balance resources to address this and other long-term projects. Please contact us again if it deteriorates further or you believe it is an imminent risk to public safety. Thanks for helping to keep Burlington a great place to live and work.
Thanks. Worth noting that one of the big challenges with this particular crosswalk is the location of the utility poles.
When crossing from west to east, there is a huge pole just to your north with a cluster of conduit that makes it even more visually distracting that blocks the view of people driving southbound, so you're not really visible until you step into the actual crosswalk. Crossing from the east to west, there is another utility pole just south of the crosswalk that blocks the view of people driving north.
Any updates on this? What sort of action would be required to trigger a redesign or have this considered as a location that needs a RFB?
I just worked outside at Scout (on the corner) for about an hour right after BHS got out and probably saw at least a dozen people almost get hit by cars not stopping for pedestrians in the crosswalk. This needs a fix ASAP.
We do share your interest in continuing to create safer pedestrian crossings around Burlington. There are no updates to share since the last one two weeks ago. This year’s flashing beacon additions are grant-funded and the other nearby crossings were identified during the North Ave Corridor Study. We look forward to implementing them this year. We continue to assess needs and requests, such as this specific crosswalk, with limited resources and will keep it on our longer-term list for serious consideration. Thank you for your commitment to Burlington’s walkability.
Traffic calming measures are currently in design at this intersection. The intersection will be raised approximately five inches above existing grade, increasing pedestrian visibility and creating a speed table from Washington Street to Berry Street. This will include associated pavement markings and signage. An additional crosswalk is being installed south of Berry Street which will provide better sight distance for vehicles and pedestrians than the existing crosswalk location. The project will likely be constructed this fall.
To improve sight distance and pedestrian visibility, a raised intersection was installed at this location and the crosswalk was moved to the south of Berry Street. The Department of Public Works has addressed this request, but will continue monitoring the intersection for safety issues. Thanks for helping to keep Burlington a great place to live and work.
