It’s not Augusta block. If you saw how fast the buses and other cars go, I think you’d think it a problem too...

This is a HUGE problem that not only the one speed bump seems to handle; thus, more stop signs that are enforced. The speed problem between 30th Ave on 1st N - 22nd Ave @ 1st St N is definitely out of control and VERY dangerous!!

Transportation Department staff have been working with the Police since last October with education and enforcement. As a result we are updating our 24-hour speed studies, as a comparison to those from last fall, to see if it has had any lasting effect. Based on these results other measures could be considered if appropriate.

I will post the results here for review once completed.

I also hope to see speed bumps and additional police enforcement here. Let's make this road safer for our cyclists and pedestrians! Drivers who can't be bothered to slow down should take one of the many other route options. This street is a designated bike lane.

It is a huge problem on 22nd Ave on the way to 1st as well, makes it nearly impossible to turn left onto 22nd AVE from Locust, Cherry et.al along the stretch to 1st Street. Same within NE, people use the streets as a cut through from Beach and Northshore Drive, failing to stop at stop signs. I have had a email conversation with Michael Frederick...the study comes back the average speed on 22nd is 38 and not worth the police departments time...I bet if someone communicated directly with the St. Pete police we might get something done about the problem.

This is a huge problem, both on 1st St. N, and on 22nd Ave N. People drive like maniacs, especially going south on 1st St. past 22nd Ave. It becomes one way for cars and there a lot of pedestrians, bike riders, people with stroller, dog walkers, small children running around, and no one ever slows down. Half the time they barely tap the brakes for the stop signs, and I've never seen anybody get stopped. It's an accident waiting to happen.

Transportation Department staff have updated the traffic counts on 1st Street between 22nd and 30th Avenues N. Copies of the traffic data summary are attached. Results are as follows:

1st Street btw 23rd and 24th Avenues N –

N/B = 2,155 vehicles; average operating speed = 38.04 MPH and 609 or 28.3% exceeded 35 MPH
S/B = 3,252 vehicles; average operating speed = 37.22 MPH and 741 or 22.8% exceeded 35 MPH

1st Street btw 27th and 28th Avenues N –

N/B = 2,205 vehicles; average operating speed = 40.37 MPH and 607 or 45.7% exceeded 35 MPH
S/B = 3,339 vehicles; average operating speed = 37.44 MPH and 828 or 24.8% exceeded 35 MPH

Based on these results it’s obvious that the Police Department has not been able to achieve anything close to compliance of the posted 25 MPH speed limit. I have however sent these results back to the Police again requesting they conduct continuous enforcement and deployment of their speed feed-back sign.

I know that residents have been blowing up See Click Fix about this issue, but I have no way of reaching out to them with these results. I have copied Kent Ulrich, Traffic Committee Chair of the Historic Old Northeast Neighborhood Association, so that he is also aware of the results and perhaps could discuss future options with the Board on what steps could be taken moving forward. IE. A stepped up enforcement request, Neighborhood education campaign, Speed Humps, etc.
