Description
Edmonson Avenue is a very wide road capable of handling two lanes of car/bus traffic, two lanes of parked cars, and bike lanes. However, there are no bike lanes. I'd like the county to move the parked cars inward from the curb to allow bicycle lanes to be painted between the curb and the row of parked cars. This will protect cyclists from traffic, and from being "doored" by a parked car driver side door opening into the bike lane. This model has been used with great success on 8th and 9th Avenues in Manhattan. At a bare minimum, bike lanes need to be painted so that motorists will pay closer attention to where cyclists are intended to ride.

Bike Lanes suck and always will suck. Why relegate yourself to the margin when you can use as much lane as you want of the existing lane. So what if a bike lane is stenciled onto Edmonson Ave. What happens when a cyclist turns OFF OF Edmonson Ave.?
Learn to ride your bike in traffic like a man and take your place in the lane where you belong. Cars will go around you.

Galen,
Thanks for the entertaining comment. I'm proposing changes that will make it safer for the entire community to commute by bike. Particularly school-aged kids and more timid riders.
My full plan involves adding feeder bike lanes painted on the side streets that access Frederick Road and therefore all of the businesses, etc. along there.
Safe riding,
Dave

Fran,
I don't believe this is fixed. I haven't seen anything new other than a pedestrian island or two.
However, there are plans to link the Ellicott City trolley trail, to the Gwynn Falls trail. I've suggested they use this Edmondson Avenue route to link the two as it's the most direct way. Though part of Edmondson is county, and the other part city so we'll see how well they play together.
Thanks,
Dave
