Thank you for your request to improve the safety and efficiency of Alameda’s transportation system.

Requests for many transportation issues, including stop signs, curb painting, and traffic calming measures, typically require 8-12 weeks to complete before staff can develop a recommendation. These requests involve review of current plans and policies, compilation of accident and/or other history, coordinating with Alameda Police and other stakeholders, outreach to residents or others who may be affected by the proposed change, on-site data collection and analysis, and sometimes consultation with outside experts.

I will follow up with you about your request when your request is at the top of the queue. Unfortunately, due to limited funding, there is a backlog of these requests and they are being handled in the order of receipt. Due to that backlog, some requests may take six months to a year to complete the analysis and recommendation.

I have seen this situation worsen in recent months. Do we have to wait for someone to get hit before something is done? Waiting for this to get to the top of the queue is like playing Russian Roulette. It is not a matter of IF someone will be injured, but rather a matter of WHEN!

This intersection will become even more congested once the homes under construction at 2100 Clement (Willow & Eagle & Clement) become occupied. It is already a congested intersection and a stop sign should be considered sooner than later. It is difficult to see traffic coming.

While waiting the 8-12 weeks for the staff to develop a recommendation, how about setting up a police sting operation at that cross walk right away, similar to what is done from time to time on Park St. and Webster St.

I agree, people now speed down Buena Vista if Clement is congested, as well as they floor it on Willow between Clement and Buena Vista. I live on Eagle and Willow, and walk everyday with my dogs and this area is just getting worse. 2 months ago a motorcycle stopped to let me cross and the car behind him came within an inch of hitting, slamming on his breaks squealing and honking. Also driving down this stretch at 25 mph, people tailgate me so bad, and sometimes honk if I stop all the way at the stop signs already on Buena Vista. One women yelled at me to "Drive Better" because I was doing the speed limit, as she passed me on the right hand side.

Your suggestion will be included in the annual review of locations where traffic calming measures may be implemented. Public Works, Alameda Police, and the City’s Transportation Planning Unit prioritize improvements based a location’s history of collisions, police citations, its relationship with existing transportation plans and improvements, cost of the improvement given budget constraints, and suggestions from members of the public, such as yours.
