Description
The parking garage at 101 Washington St across from the Jack London Cinema regularly puts out this "no jaywalking sign". However, crossing midblock is only illegal for pedestrians between two signalized intersections, and is allowed elsewhere such as on this block of Washington between 2nd and Embarcadero. Please contact the garage owners to have them remove this illegal sign. If pedestrian safety is an issue here then it could be addressed via traffic calming and perhaps a midblock crosswalk directly between the garage and cinema.

I do, however, have some question as to whether the sign itself is illegal. That might depend on whether it's using the term "jaywalking" to signify an illegal act, or merely as a colloquial term for crossing mid-block (in an attempt to discourage that practice). Is such discouragement an illegal act, or merely an exercise of free expression? I'm not vehemently opposed to a mid-block crosswalk, but if need be (in case "jaywalking" is considered misappropriation of a legal term), the sign could be altered to say "Please do not cross here. Use crosswalk at corner."
So much for the "illegal sign."

Dear Sir or Madam:
Thank you for contacting the Oakland Call Center regarding this matter. Please report this issue to Jack London Square, at (510) 451-8700 to report sign for this private parking lot.
Thank you,

To Oakland Call Center: The sign is on a public sidewalk on the north side of Embarcadero, on city right of way and not Port of Oakland property. Therefore, the city should follow up on it as a code violation issue.
If the city wants to restrict pedestrian crossings midblock here then they can install a prohibition to standard. Otherwise pedestrians are allowed to cross midblock after yielding to cross traffic. This sign confuses the legality and could result in liability for the city and/or sign owner in the case of a collision.
