The speeding on Fernside is out of control. I recently got hit pulling out of our side street. Where are the speed traps? They used to sit around this corner regularly and traffic was much slower then. Also, cars coming onto the island via the High St bridge (presumably heading to Bay Farm) that catch the red light to turn left onto Fernside, then shoot straight down High, make a left onto Bayo Vista, and then a left onto Monte Vista, to then go right on Fernside and beat the traffic. Problem is my kids were almost hit twice, I have had close calls many times, as have neighbors. They FLY through our neighborhood trying to beat everyone to Fernside. Saving maybe one minute? It's so dangerous. What can be done?

Requests for many transportation issues, including stop signs, curb painting, and traffic calming measures, typically require 8-12 weeks to complete before staff can develop a recommendation. These requests involve review of current plans and policies, compilation of accident and/or other history, coordinating with Alameda Police and other stakeholders, outreach to residents or others who may be affected by the proposed change, on-site data collection and analysis, and sometimes consultation with outside experts.
I will follow up with you about your request when your request is at the top of the queue. Unfortunately, due to limited funding, there is a backlog of these requests and they are being handled in the order of receipt. Due to that backlog, some requests may take six months to a year to complete the analysis and recommendation.

The East End and Fernside Blvd residents lost the battle to keep our quaint, calm and quiet neighborhood when in the sixties Harbor Bay developers were let off the hook requiring them to help fund a bypass thru San Leandro Bay to 880 as a requirement to development. Alameda voted to open Fernside Blvd to the Bay Farm bridge and now we have tens of thousands of HBI residents trying to get to and from 880 thru the East End. Speed bumps on a major thoroughfare are not the solution - writing tickets is: Over 32 on Fernside and over 25 on the side streets. 24/7 police presence will also help curb the new rampant crime wave.
Let this be a lesson regarding further development on our island with its limited access: Developers should be required to contribute significantly toward a new tunnel/bridge/ferry (not just bus passes). Land for ferry car parking should also be part of the deal.

@K Braun so true and our city leaders will give developers a free pass (campaign $$ come from developers). There are hundreds of high density units going up simultaneously around the island right now and I don't see any infrastructure improvements or additional ways on or off the island. And I agree with you on writing tickets and a larger police presence. When we first moved here over ten years ago there were ALWAYS speed traps on Fernside and I would see police all over the island, no matter where you drove you'd see a cop car. The speeding was a rare thing. Everyone knew you'd be certain to get a ticket. Now I go days of driving my kids to and fro across the island and I don't see a single police car. There are no speed traps and I've witnessed more accidents and near misses than ever before. I really wish the city would do something about this. It doesn't feel safe. I've been hit and today a near miss with the speeder screaming at me.
@Lisa F speed bumps on our neighborhood side streets might work, or a blocked street or roundabout at the Bayo Vista/Monte Vista intersection. We don't need four ways out of that tiny intersection, there are plenty of options out to High and Fernside, and they block streets for this exact reason in Berkeley. It would hopefully stop the speeding through of am and pm Bay Farm commuters.

while I was at a complete stop at the righthand turn out from Fernside Blvd northbound onto High Street Bridge (to get to 880FWY) and looking left for oncoming traffic, I was rear ended at 6am in Sept 2016 by a speeding Honda minivan whose driver routinely drives to Alameda from Hayward (apparently to drop off a small child) in the morning for school. I suffered a double whiplash and because I was looking to the left, my neck whiplash was further exacerbated. This driver apparently didn't realize there was a stop sign at the right hand turn out from Fernside Blvd onto High Street Bridge so he didn't brake to stop.
While he accepted 100% liability, my late model car bumper didn't show much damage and thus his insurance company has refused to pay a nickel of any medical injuries (which includes a burst eardrum suffered from the inflammation 2 weeks later). so I have just came across this blog and decided to leave this comment about someone who did get injured from a speeding car that continues to speed along the Fernside Blvd-High Street roads.
About 7 months later, I was travelling the same route and there he was except this time he was in front of me speeding again and he revved up to 40 to 45mph over the High Street Bridge just in time to be stopped at the signal before the 880 FWY.
I reported to the Alameda police that this driver routinely speeds between 5:30am to 6:15am on Fernside Blvd onto High Street Bridge but they said there is no police coverage so that's one reason why speeders keep on speeding down Fernside Blvd from Harbor Bay Island and the Oakland Airport. Fernside Blvd and High Streets are used as runways for speeding cars to get to the Oakland Airport, to Harbor Bay Isle and Bay Farm.
If you get injured in a low speed accident, I estimate he hit me between 20 and 30 mph but my late model 1996 car is built like a tank and had reinforced vinyl bumper guard, GET A PERSONAL INJURY ATTORNEY right away because the opposing side will refuse to pay a dime for any soft tissue injuries.

11 months ago, Alan from public works promised to follow up on this (see above). I assume this request is at or near the top of the queue by now (6-12 months backlog, 8-12 weeks study/analysis).
