Description
The pedestrian crosswalk between the main entrance to central branch library and the children's museum is getting more dangerous lately with vehicles crossing while persons and even children are in the crosswalk.
In the past few days, a vehicle took out a "yield to pedestrians" sign that was installed on the southbound lane at the crosswalk. Drivers are failing to yield and their crossing only encourages other drivers to cross the crosswalk when pedestrians are using it.
Even the US Postal Service, known for its safety campaigns, was observed to cross the crosswalk here when it is in use by pedestrians.
While it may appear safe for drivers to cross behind pedestrians using the crosswalk, this creates an intimidating environment for the pedestrian and for others observing the crossing so as to be less safe for all. Additionally, the driver is only focused on one pedestrian while ignoring others who may enter the crosswalk behind the pedestrian already there.
Suggest increased traffic safety monitoring of this pedestrian crosswalk by GDOT and by GPD to bring some enforcement and engineering to bear on this increasingly dangerous crosswalk.
