Our City Arborist has contact Duke Energy. They had stated that they would be taking down the tree. As they have not, we will be reaching out to them again to follow up on the issue. We will keep you updated.

What about the stump? That could be a trip hazard.

The current budget allocation for tree maintenance has been exhausted for this budget year. This stump has been placed on a list to be ground when funds become available.

I have a question for the arborist. We would like to plant a tree on the street side of the sidewalk. Before we do, could you advise on type that would be most suitable? We would like to plant a Natchez Crepe Myrtle since we already have one in our front yard that has done very well.

While Natchez Crape Myrtle is a beautiful small to medium sized distinct southern tree, the growth height of 30 feet tall in this location can pose a concern. The power lines that are located directly above this planting location will lead to this type of tree to be topped by the crews that provide line clearance for the safe operation of the power lines. A plan is in place to work with Duke Energy, over the next several years, to remove the large trees that are growing under these lines along W. College Ave.. Following the removal of these trees we will be working with Trees for Tomorrow to replace the trees removed with trees that will be allowed to grow to maturity without the need for power line clearance pruning. With all that being said, I would encourage you to plant a tree in this location that will follow these guidelines. A list of a few trees with a max growth height of 20 feet tall or less;

White Fringe Tree
Avondale Redbud
Star Magnolia
Prairifire Crabapple
Thundercloud Plum
There is a white crape myrtle that is said to be able to be used to replace a Natchez, but I am not very familiar with it or the availability of it, the name of this crape myrtle is 'Acoma' it is said to grow to a height of 9-12 feet tall and has a shape that is considered to be broad vase shape to spreading. With the width of the space between the curb and sidewalk this may prohibit this tree from being a great choice. I would be glad to discuss further if you would like.
