I've seen a woman out by the freeway exit at 52nd st and shattuck, with a cardboard sign. It says homeless mommy and son, anything you can offer, or something similar. Occasionally she has her little boy with her. You can tell those days are probably the scariest for both of them. I don't think she stays there. She seems very serious about what she's doing out there. I've talked with her several times and watched many more.
She's not part of the riff raff. She is trying to survive with her child. If you see her, maybe offer her what you can. Or at least, don't make things harder on her. She was in our shoes once, probably. With misfortune, any of us could end up where she is. Sometimes a better solution might be to show empathy and offer some small aid or a nod of the head in acknowledgement. Not all homeless people are a blight on our community. They are our community.
