That light should definitely be reprogrammed. One of the most dangerous corners I have encountered.

Yes, please address this! Many intersections in this area and on High St are dangerous because drivers do not want to yield to pedestrians. More signage and lights may help, as well as speed bumps to slow the cars racing along High St like a highway with no regard to pedestrians.

I had a driver yell at me at this intersection saying that he had right of way even though I had a walk sign. It's not driver inattention; it has become a rampant case of me-ism. More attention to pedestrian rights please!

i like it when i see groups of pedestrians start to cross and force the cars to wait and let them cross.
it is the millennials who think the world owes them something that are in a bug hurry to go know where:)
but i agree the light should be changed back to the way it was.

A young, bearded hipster guy gave me the finger the other day when he cut me off as I was crossing at that intersection - in the crosswalk, with the pedestrian "walk" light on. Whether he hates pedestrians,women or old people I don't know - but I was disgusted. Why can't the lights be re-programmed to give pedestrians the ability to cross without having to worry about being hit by drivers who don't obey the law?

I wonder if Portland still has traffic cops. I see people running red lights all the time. It would be nice to have a police officer at that intersection from time to time; but BETTER TRAFFIC ENGINEERING is the answer. The guy who nearly ran over me was immediately stopped by the red light at Congress Street, so I tapped on his window and explained that pedestrians have right of way by law. He argued anyway. Not a Millenial, by the way.

Maybe a dedicated right turn arrow would help..?

There are already dedicated turn signals for cars. I am asking for dedicated walk signals - pedestrians deserve the equal right to be able to cross without competing with heedless drivers. We don't have a chance against two tons of speeding metal.

Clancey we wont ever see dedicated walk signals for pedestrians i would love them my self but i am sure they would be costly and sadly drivers would still try to sneak though.
the crossing at high street and spring street is proof of it.
Even back when it was a 4 way red light when you got the walk signal cars would still try to turn on red and it was dangerous back then.

To Portlander Who Cares: So we should do nothing to protect pedestrians because drivers are thoughtless and self-centered? I disagree. We should do whatever is necessary to change their behavior -- by adjusting the signals, enforcement/aggressive ticketing, additional signage. Why should the City enable illegal behavior?

as a walking person i would love to cross the street with out having to watch out for those who disregard the lights

It should not but unless we have a cop on that corner drivers will pretty much do what they want this ongoing problem proves it.
when the light made all 4 ways stop until the walk sign counted down from 15 seconds to 0 cars mostly staied put .
since the change many feel oh well we have the green to heck with the walk light.
its sad i agree 100% .

I am in favor of changing the light sequence so that vehicles have to stop until the pedestrian countdown clock has cycled.

Perhaps a well marked pedestrian crosswalk an d signals with the flashing yellow lights, such as on Marginal Way near Planet Fitness, and on Bedford St. by USM...

A Public Works crew has investigated this matter. And we will be making adjustments.

I know! I have been here >20 yrs now. Not so much fun these days. The left turn from Spring eastbound onto High is dangerous. Pedestrians don't have a chance. And the light timing does not allow drivers to yield w/o impeding the smooth flow of traffic.

I honestly don't care about drivers. They are sitting in climate-controlled comfort, usually chatting on their phones or texting, drinking their beverage of choice and listening to music -- off in their own little worlds. Many have an exaggerated sense of entitlement, and become furious when they're impeded. They act as if ten seconds (maximum) taken out of their day is an affront. A pedestrian hasn't a chance against a two-ton vehicle. If a driver has to sit and wait for a brief time so somebody can cross safely (s)he can get over it. Share the road. Get used to it.

I don't care about pedestrians. They walk about as if they own the street, usually off in their own little worlds chatting on their phones, talking with friends or listening to music. Many are so inconsiderate, they just walk out into traffic because they think they have the right of way. They act as though waiting two minutes for a crosswalk or a break in traffic will kill them. I wish more pedestrians had the patience of drivers.

Paulec252 Pedestrians have the right of way the DRIVERS should get off the phone and DRIVE and exersize some pacents.
I witnessed a typical MALE in a oversize truck who thought he owned the road chase a women down the road because HE had to wait omg 15 seconds for the light to countdown and the person cross in the cross walk.

Paulec252: False equivalency, as PortlanderWhoCares notes. Pedestrians crossing in crosswalks have the legal right of way; drivers are supposed to stop, not cut them off, as many do. A pedestrian hit by two tons of metal hasn't a chance; if (s)he bumps against a car what happens? Pedestrians - particularly in winter - are struggling against the elements; it's simple courtesy for drivers sitting in warm comfort to yield, in accordance with the law. What does it cost - ten seconds (if that)?
