Description
Traffic Safety Issue: The westbound traffic backs up in the left travel lane of Va Beach Blvd due to the short duration of the left turn light onto southbound Kellam Rd. It's a definite safety hazard. The left turn light allows only 4 or 5 cars to turn, where there may be as many as 12-20 cars in both the left travel lane and the left turn lane of westbound Va Beach Blvd. It appears that many (if not most) of the cars are making that left turn to go the Walmart on south Kellam, or to the US post office on Cleveland St. While this particular event took place at 1:45 PM, I have observed this traffic backup at other times on other days. It is a definite safety issue because of the stopped traffic that backs up from the left turn lane into the 45 mph left travel lane of Va Beach Blvd. And this is likely to become more hazardous as holiday shopping traffic increases. Recommend traffic engineers observe this intersection and increase the duration of the left turn light from westbound Va Beach Blvd onto south Kellam Rd. An alternative would be to lengthen the left turn lane.
