Description

For the past few years, we have had a progressive problem with water
flowing over the sidewalk in front of our property.
When it rains or snows in cold weather, water/ice accumulates to the point
that we need to constantly tend to it, at least twice daily. When
temperature falls below 32 degrees, the water on the sidewalk freezes
and creates a potentially dangerous situation for pedestrians. The
following day, when sunlight melts more snow, the water re-accumulates
on the sidewalk only to refreeze during the evening. We are doing the
best we can to keep up with it, but each year the drainage issue is
getting worse and therefore, more difficult to keep up with. Salting
doesn't help because it is washed away as the ice melts. It appears
that on the property line (between us and our neighbor), the melting
snow causes water to flow on the sidewalk and down the sidewalk causing
a sheet of ice about 10 feet long when it freezes. This process
continues as long as there are freezing conditions. Over the 30 years
that we have lived here, the sidewalk has been slowly sinking below the
ground, aggravating this issue. We are constantly applying sand to the
ice so that pedestrians have some traction while walking. We purchased
an orange traffic cone and positioned it on the sidewalk, warning
pedestrians to use caution.

Of course with the blizzard this year, the problem is more pronounced
but it has been a major problem for us for the past several years, not
just because of the unusual amount of snowfall.
