Description
This light is not programmed correctly. All lights should be green at the same time to allow traffic to keep flowing. As it is now, traffic backs up in the right hand turn lane and creates a mess. Make the right arrow 'green' at the same time as the rest, and happiness will ensue.

Per Dave Garon of DPW, he agrees that this is a problem, but the present hardware/software cannot handle making the arrow red during pedestrian crossings and green the rest of the time. He has ordered a $3000 update that he plans to install this winter.
From my point of view, this is THE entry thoroughfare into Burlington, and ought to have optimized signaling to be clear to traffic. This particular snafu is the most obvious, but the lack of synchronization of the lights from I-89 through this intersection is also a problem. Further, signage is non-obvious as to the single through lane.

I totally agree. It is a mess.
I raised this problem a while ago. See this link: http://bit.ly/20277H7
Talk to Dave Garen of DPW. He agrees. He says that a new module (I think hardware) is required. He has put it into the budget. He says that he will install it after the weather gets worse. When that happens, we should all applaud See Click Fix because, as you say, the light is a mess.
Beyond that, the whole area from I-89 through this intersection should be coordinated and on intelligent computer control. This is the main thoroughfare into Burlington, and the lights are not coordinated. With all the money spent to improve the I-89 access, money should have been spent to make the lights work intelligently. We spend huge amounts of money to improve the roads, and then govern access through highly unintelligent traffic lights that have little to no sensitivity to actual traffic flow. Here is a link to a 2012 national report on this crazy problem. http://bit.ly/1MHkL8Y

Here is another link on the cost of silly traffic signals:

Dave Garen from Public Works in totally on confusion. He has got the new interface, but still missing a part.

What a great example of government actually listening and working out the kinks.
We should have a public forum on traffic, pedestrians and signals to make #BTV a better place for all. The North Avenue bicycle lane controversy is another example of the need to think what is the best for everybody. Burlington can get even better, one step at a time.
Thank you Dave!
