Description
If you are on Hwy 72 at the Hughes Rd intersection you can make a U-turn. Hughes Rd also allows a right turn onto University at that same light. Because of multiple lanes of traffic feeding into this intersection it is impossible to tell if someone will make a Uturn or just a left turn from Hwy 72 onto Hughes. There needs to be no Uturns from University allowed at this light because it is causing wrecks- which of course means injuries and traffic delays in a very congested dangerous area.

How are westbound drivers supposed to get to all of the businesses on the south side of 72 between Hughes and Lawson's Ridge if no U-Turn is allowed?
Also, I think the big plans for upgrading 72 in this area already have better implementations of U-turns accounted for.

So the "Concerned" user wants no U-turns or left turns for west bound 72 drivers at Hughes...? Instead they want drivers to use the "designated turn around" that's just past the light...? (See attached photo where the pin is dropped)
Here's why that's a terrible idea:
1. Drivers that want to head south bound on Hughes or east bound on 72 would have to yield to east bound traffic meaning long back ups
2. The backed up line would quickly back flow into the intersection and would pretty easily put the area into gridlock.
3. The backed up people would also have no dedicated lane to queue in so, there's a very real danger of moving traffic not noticing that one of the normal lanes has suddenly become a full stop queue(see the median cut just west of slaughter/72 that lets west bound turn into the shopping center where Jeffersons used to be as an example of why this is bad)
4. Drivers wanting to go south on Hughes would not only have to deal with the u-turn but would also have to quickly jump over two additional lanes to get to the must turn right lane that goes to Hughes (very dangerous)
5. There's already a light and two dedicated left turn lanes in place to manage all of this pretty well.
This entire request (getting rid of U-turns) is stupid for two reasons:
1. There's a sign for people on Hughes wanting to turn right on red that says "Red light right on red must yield to U-Turns". That means, when west bound obviously has the green arrow to ten and there are cars queued up, just don't turn right until they're all clear! That's how all the rest of the state and most of the country works!
2. Speaking of how the state works... This isn't something the city can change anyway. Madison city recently got in trouble for forbidding U-turns at lights because state law says they're legal and a city can't override that without state approval.
This whole thread is moot. Obey the traffic laws, quit being so careless, and just be patient while a few cars proceed through the intersection the way it was designed to be used.
