Description
There are consistently people speeding 20+mph over the speed limit on Harrison Street between Pearl St. and Hamilton Place. When the light at Pearl St. is green, cars fly by on this residential street where children and elderly people live and where there is a school (Lakeview Middle). A few weeks ago, a car was going so fast that it skidded and flung a parked car into the gate of our elderly neighbor's yard. If he had been sitting outside (which he often does), he would have been killed. Not to mention his parked car was totaled. This street is extremely dangerous and we need traffic calming devices. When the stop light at Pearl St. is broken and blinking, people actually go the speed limit instead of speeding through the green at 50+mph. Speed cameras at that light could also be an immense help given that Oakland just got a grant to install more of those. An officer was parked here today because PG&E was doing some work and he concurred that this street is extremely dangerous and that people speed. He encouraged me to reach out to the City, and his verification of how dangerous this is made me realize we really need a traffic assessment and some thoughtful solutions to the speeding problem on this residential street that people treat like an extension of the highway.
