  Totally agree that the pond weeds are out of control. The city has a plan for it, outlined here, but this 311 request is important as well to keep the issue front-and-center. Thank you for reporting it.

  I've been complaining about this to the city for months. The city just closes every report I submit with the comment that the problem has been fixed. The city's inability to do basic maintenance on a popular park is an absolute disgrace and a sad commentary on the competence of assigned city staff. I note the city's plan cited above but will believe it when I see it.

  The pond is NOT overrun with “algea”. The green surface plants are Lemnoideae, aka duckweed, which actually cleans and filters the water and provides a key food source for the ducks and migratory waterfowl which might otherwise graze on the green field grass there. The duckweed blooms in summer and gets eaten up over winter by ducks, fish, and other animals. The trash is definitely a problem, usually caused by inadequate trash bins or kids who are just too lazy to use the bins.

  In response to P's comment, I submitted my complaint 4 months ago and I have since learned, as you point out, that the growth in question is not algae but duckweed. On the other hand I have lived near the park for over 25 years and it wasn't until last year that the duckweed appeared for the first time. By the middle of fall it was covering the entire pond. Once I understood that it was duckweed I did a little further reading and one thing I learned is that when it covers the entire surface of a pond, it can lead to fish kills through oxygen depletion. The pond is now clear of the duckweed and the water is clear again so I have been looking for the fish that normally live there. I have not seen any fish for months and hope that doesn't mean they've been killed off by the duckweed.
