In the next few weeks, we will be testing a new rubber type of sidewalk material. This material is not supposed to cause damage to tree roots. Once testing is completed, we hope to be able to install this type of sidewalk material in this area to avoid killing the tree(s) in this area.
The Public Service Department has examined the tree growth here and found this to be a highly unusual case, with rubber sidewalks not useable. The feasible solution is to remove the tree and fix the sidewalk, costing approximately $10,000 in this case. The current annual sidewalk budget is $20,000 with which to work towards all present sidewalk issues, and funds are now exhausted for this year. Unfortunately, the City doesn’t currently have options for addressing this issue, and will paint the affected section yellow to mark it and determine if funding can be found in the fiscal year beginning July 1. You may want to contact your City Council member to advocate on this issue, and please feel free to contact Public Service at 843.383.3006 if you have questions.
An elevated platform crossing the roots that have damaged the existing sidewalk might be a viable option. Removing the tree will lead to erosion issue on the hillside down the road.
Per the Public Service Department: Funding for any form of installation at the sidewalk location isn't available in the city's current budget, although the sidewalk damage and complicating factors from the tree are known and will be under consideration for future budgets. The location has been examined by the department, which can go into greater detail on the issues involved at this site by contacting 843.383.3006.
