We have received requests for a marked crosswalk crossing Sunset Way at 6th Ave in the past. We have this intersection slated for evaluation, to determine if it’s a good candidate for crosswalk markings or other treatments. Crosswalk markings installed at locations that are not protected by a stop sign or signal are evaluated in accordance with national standards relating to pedestrian and vehicle volumes and vehicle speeds. A new crosswalk can improve visibility for pedestrians attempting to cross the street, but can also reduce safety at times, if a motorist isn’t prepared for a pedestrian to cross, and the pedestrian walks into traffic. We take new crosswalk requests very seriously, to make sure installation won’t create more hazards than benefits. If an intersection meets the perquisites, we then evaluate in relation to site distance, visibility, and ADA compliance, and compare the request to other needs throughout the City.
We currently have a few intersections around town that we are evaluating for qualifications for markings. The intersection of 6th and Sunset is currently in the queue for this evaluation, and the evaluation will be completed within the year. I can’t guarantee that the evaluation will prove that a marked crosswalk is warranted, but the evaluation will provide us with the documentation on whether or not to proceed with the request.
We are also updating our crossing guidelines, which will help us formulate decisions on how to make existing crosswalks safer and a more user friendly experience. This also allows the City to create a uniform crossing experience for crosswalks in the City. The guidelines should be complete by the end of the year. This will also help us formulate improvements to this intersection.
Any updates on this? Now that this is a detour route due to the water tower work happening in the highlands, it’s a pain crossing over for cyclists to align with the direction of traffic.
