I am following up to determine and discover the progress made by your teams regarding the increasingly encroachment of the 42nd street overpass encampment. During our gathering with our district 1 representative on 9/23/22 there was much discussion regarding the previous designation of the area as a non-encampment zone and a safe walking zone for our children’s path to school. Since our meeting, the city has appeared for two partial clean-ups of one (North side) side of the street. Since such time, the encampment has grown to include both sides of the street with several abandoned vehicles, and long term parked shipping containers.

The underpass and surrounding areas evolved into a lawless Mad Max zone, in which the transient residents openly do and sell drugs, vandalize the permanent structures, have open fires, own unleashed violent dogs, trespass and hide illicit materials in our driveways and open sides of our homes, defecate and litter in the surrounding green space and on our properties, threaten our taxpayer’s safety and wellbeing (on occasion with weapons), and more. The list goes on and on.

What is being done to reduce these incidents and enforce the law in this area? Has there been any further movement on redesignating this zone (that was designated as low priority during COVID specifically) to a high priority now that COVID is reaching the endemic stage? Or better yet, when can we reinstate this space as a non-encampment, no overnight parking, and safe walking path, as it seems those designations were only revoked as an emergency COVID response?

These issues have degraded to an acute degree since our last community meeting on 9/23/22, and we need a follow up as to the progress being made and the community-first measures being taken to ensure the health and safety of all.

How can the city allow the illegal encampment built in front of other community residences. The community residents pay taxes and they should be receiving protection from the city council.
