Sustainable Infrastructure Plan Construction Updates

Public Works is continuing to implement its part of the Sustainable Infrastructure Plan - reinvesting in the core infrastructure that connects us. We are on our way to repaving and extensively patching over 6 miles of roads, reconstructing 3 miles of sidewalks and rehabilitating over 3 miles of water mains. These numbers will exceed last year's ambitious pace and are well above the historical average. We are also planning transportation improvements around the city - continuing to make the public right of way better connected and safer for all pedestrians, drivers, cyclists and transit riders. For more information on the Plan and last year's progress, please see burlingtonvt.gov/dpw/reinvestment. For additional information on the projects we have completed, commenced or will undertake, please see burlingtonvt.gov/construction.

Lower Downtown Progress

Our crews and contractors have remained on schedule and on budget and we are pleased to be wrapping up 3 major projects shortly: our water main project on Maple between Battery & Pine (by next week) and our water main relining projects on Maple between Pine & St. Paul and on Pine between Main & Maple (this week). This will significantly alleviate congestion in this important corridor by reopening Pine St to two way traffic, reopening Battery to all traffic and converting Maple from local traffic only to mostly eastbound traffic through St. Paul (with some intermittent road closures except to local traffic) when paving work starts as early as the week of 6/25. As always, please follow signs and any instructions from on-site crews and travel safely. Our work implementing Great Streets begins on St. Paul St (between Main & Maple) in early fall. We will be reconstructing the sidewalk, repaving the road and adding stormwater enhancements to continue beautifying our streetscape and building a downtown for all Burlingtonians. Our goal is to get a majority of the work complete this season, and finish the balance of work next construction season.

New North End Projects

After discussing with residents and our project engineers, we have decided to begin all of the impactful North Ave project work next week -- to accommodate any increased traffic demand for Burlington High School's graduation this week. (Congratulations and best of luck, graduates!). North Ave will be paved from Lakeview Cemetery to Ethan Allen Parkway and extensively patched in two sections (Strong to Crowley and EAP to Shore Rd). There will also be a water main replacement project on EAP from North Ave to Lopes. There will be impacts to traffic during these projects and our contractors will be using approved traffic control measures. As always, please travel safely. For additional information on this water project, please see the letter property owners received here, burlingtonvt.gov/DPW/Water-Main-Replacement-Project.

Water Main Projects

Other water main replacement projects include Colchester Ave (through mid-August when paving starts), Church St (Maple to Adams and beginning in August), Latham Court (ongoing through August), Birch Ct/Cayuga Ct/Dorset Ln (July to September) and Ferguson Road (Pine to Shelburne, August to October).Other water main relining projects (typically less intensive and quicker) include Pine St (between Howard and Lakeside, ongoing through July), Maple St (between South Willard and South Prospect, mid June to August), and Allen St, Charlotte St, Flynn Ave (between 255 Flynn and Shelburne) and Hillcrest road - all schedules TBD for these streets. Sidewalk and Paving Work

We have recently completed sidewalk reconstruction on Crombie, Decatur, Nash, Overlake Park, Elmwood Ave, Manhattan Drive and Lakeview Terrace. We are finishing up Ward St and Ledge Rd this week. During the June 18 City Council and Board of Finance meetings, we will be bringing forward a request to approve our RFP for our remaining list of sidewalks to reconstruct. While we are currently re-paving Park St and Pleasant Ave, we have also completed significant paving work on portions of Pine St (having completed the Lakeside to Flynn section and laying a base course from Kilburn to Lakeside), Manhattan Dr, Cherry St and Oakbeach. We will begin on a section of College St later this month as well as the aforementioned project on Maple. Cayuga, Dorset, and Birch will follow in July. Austin and South Cove will begin in late August or early September and Dunder Rd will be repaved in October.
