The footpath leading from East Rock Road to Whitney Avenue (past the foot-bridge side trail) has a large oak tree blocking it - must have come down during yesterday's storm. Not urgent, but should be cut through at some point to open the path again.

Why is the water quality off Short Beach deteriorating so badly, and what (if anything) can be done about it?

As recently as 2016 this location received a grade of A+ from the annual survey of Long Island Sound beaches. But by 2018 it was down to a C- grade, with very frequent failures (meaning too many feces-related bacteria) and extreme failures (meaning way too many on some occasions). This is happening whether it has rained or not, so it isn't just storm runoff.

By way of comparison, Branford Point received a B- and East Haven's town beach received an A+ for 2018.

So what is the source of all this new fecal matter, in which people are swimming and boating?

Encampment in woods near the rustic footbridge in Edgewood Park. Please find a real home for whoever lives here. And maybe a rehab program. There were syringes at the viewing platform overlooking the marsh.

My kayak carrier was stolen while I was out on the Mill River today. Since it has little cash value, this was probably a malicious prank. So I want to (1) alert fellow park users that there is somebody out there ready to steal or destroy your belongings and (2) ask that if you find it, you let me know (hard to imagine that the thief would have carried it far - though I did search the immediate area as well as downriver).

LET'S TRY AGAIN. Not only did the city never respond to multiple requests last year to do something about the homeless encampment on the Mill River (unfortunately inhabited more and more by thieves and such, not the decent sorts of years ago), but they never cleaned up the piles of trash left behind when winter hit.

Right now there don't seem to be camps set up, which would be great except that there is at least one armed vigilante patrolling the area. Man with a long gun. Friendly enough but still makes a park user nervous. Most likely a homeowner fed up with the total lack of government response.

I don't want anybody arrested here. I do want the city to (a) clean up the mess, and (b) develop some sort of a plan to keep this area either uninhabited or controlled/patrolled so that it doesn't get trashed or turn yet again into a hub for neighborhood thieves and addicts. Too much to ask?

  • English Drive New Haven, Connecticut - East Rock

The bicycle lane on English Drive at the summit of East Rock has virtually disappeared, and multiple cars routinely park in it despite this being a no parking zone. This is a safety hazard as well as a nuisance. Please repaint the bicycle lane and begin enforcing the parking rules at the summit. (Preferably begin with warnings rather than tickets until people have a chance to adapt.)

I have previously [posted this as a "road markings" issue. The road people transferred it to Parks and it died. I then posted it as a Parks request, but there has been no response at all. This is a safety issue: people ride bicycles on the park road, and other people drive too quickly and/or park where they block the now-invisible bike lane.

If someone is badly injured or killed here, the city will be liable. And there is now a track record going back many months to show that the city was aware of the problem.

THIRD REQUEST THIS YEAR - EARLIER POSTS IGNORED BY CITY

Please clean up the homeless encampments along the Mill River. And please implement some sort of plan, in future years, to manage these sites. I don't mind people living in the woods, but the amount of garbage generated is unacceptable anywhere, let alone in a park.

    REPOSTING ISSUE IGNORED TWICE BEFORE:

The bicycle lane on the summit of East Rock has faded almost completely away. Cars routinely park along it, narrowing the road to the point where it is dangerous for cyclists or pedestrians when cars drive past (sometimes in the wrong direction). Please repaint the bicycle route and begin enforcing the parking regulations by issuing warnings to violators. (Hold off on tickets for a while, please, since many people have grown accustomed to parking wherever they choose with no consequences.)

If a cyclist is injured or killed on this stretch of road, it will be the city's responsibility. Financial as well as moral.

Edgerton Park (inside the Cliff Street entrance by the greenhouse, or possibly the Edgehill entrance) would be a good location. Folks could ride from downtown and check their bikes here while using the park. Neighborhood people (or Albertus Magnus students, who are nearby) could rent bikes here to take downtown or elsewhere.

A large, beautiful rooster is strutting nervously at the edge of the park right where Orange Street begins. He let me feed him some grain but was too wary to let me get him into an animal carrier. Any chance of a rescue?

The rental bicycles have information printed on them explaining how to use the program. But the instructions are printed only in Spanish. It's great that Spanish is available, since at least 1 in 5 city residents are primarily Spanish-speaking. But what about everybody else? Shouldn't the instructions also be in English?

The City cleared a homeless encampment late last fall. The camp was by the banks of the Mill River. Land access is from the Willow Street entrance to Route 91. Here is the problem: Although the residents were expelled and their possessions impounded, many of those possessions - including furniture and trash - were simply left behind. There are at least three camps clearly visible from the river where lots and lots of stuff is just piled up to rot. This is not a good use of land that abuts onto East Rock Park! One nice young couple even bagged up their trash (at least 30 bin bags full) but it's still there by the riverbank. Can the sites be visited and cleaned up? It is really an eyesore for park users and will become a health hazard as the stuff decays.

"Giggles," our pet rabbit, went missing late last night. He is a brown dwarf velveteen (looks a lot like a little wild bunny), very gentle and likes people. No evidence of violence, but the top was off his cage this AM. Unless it was a very neat predator, he either escaped or was frightened off by a scavenger after his food. Linden Street between Orange and Foster.
