No SCF for this so am posting to get an explanation. Where did the traffic signals at this intersection? Any ETA on their replacements?
  • 300 East Street New Haven, Connecticut - Mill River
This is a frequent event, but the entire mill river area reeks of a chemical odor, and it would be helpful to get an explanation of what it is. I believe it emanates form the port. It actually gets into our building on East Street, but you can smell it across the highway when traveling. Can we get an explanation of what it is? It is NOT natural gas obviously, but does smell similar to oil or tar or even burnt coffee.

There has been a very strong, gas or skunk-like odor in the Mill River area for the past few days. It's strong enough to permeate the building I'm working in.

Can we get an official response from whomever is causing this? Does DEEP need to get involved? It's certainly not pleasant and is definitely a quality of life issue.

  • 115 Wallace St New Haven, Connecticut - Mill River

Someone has abandoned a stripped vehicle filled to the brim with trash on Wallace Street. It is blocking our loading dock and preventing large trucks from being able to enter easily.

Written on the truck is an inscription
    "Owner lives @ 422 Blatchley - Sammy"

Whether this is the case or not, it might be worth looking into via registration records.

In any case, please have a wrecker remove this vehicle.

Today, I witnessed a terrible sight on Trumbull street- A car was being towed by Lombard Motors, presumably due to street sweeping. The car was pouring smoke from its brakes, due to the parking brake being engaged. He continued onto the highway, with the car smoking the entire way. It was shocking.

I was in traffic and could not take a picture, but it is highly likely that this car will require a serious repair or potential brake failure on top of the fine and towing fee.

My car was towed several weeks ago, with the parking brake also potentially engaged, and I am now going to have to make sure that the car has not been damaged.

While towing for safety reasons make make such action necessary, I believe it is highly improper for the city to tow cars due to street sweeping if doing so will result in such severe damage.

Most importantly this owner likely will have no idea of the damage done to their car and they may potentially be at grave risk for an accident in the future.

The latch bar is missing from the playground gate, preventing it from being able to be closed securely, and posing a danger for parents trying to keep runaway toddlers from exiting.

For years, the Walk siren has wailed it's loud beep every several minutes or so, much to the detriment of Trinity Church, and I assume the other establishments in the area. For the Church in particular, the wail has punctuated very church service, as the acoustics of the church let the sound carry straight through whenever there is any sort of silence.

With the new, upgraded walk signals showing up, is it possible to refit this siren with the chirps that the new signals emit? It would make a huge difference!

The pedestrian walk button is functioning incorrectly. When pressed, the red light was activated but the pedestrian signal was not. moments later, the signal turned back to green without the walk signal ever being activated.

  • 2 34 Franklin St New Haven, CT - Wooster Square

Last week the DOT undertook a massive clearcutting of mature trees that previously screened I-91 and the entrance and exit ramps in the Wooster Square area.
What were once embankments with trees blocking both the sites and sounds of the highways for the residences south and north of Wooster Square are now naked hills.

Needless to say this has drastically decreased the quality of life of those living near the highway.

Without the trees, the noise level has increase to the point where residents previously happy living near the highways are now having to wear earplugs to sleep.

While this might be necessary for the interchange reconstruction underway, this has had a significant and negative impact on Wooster Square and its residences.

I hope that the DOT realizes just how big an impact this has, and has plans to address this as construction continues, because right now it's a disaster.

  • 1447 Chapel Street New Haven, CT - Dwight

Driving down Chapel Street a week ago, I almost collided with an ATV rider blowing through every intersection and driving like a bat out of hell.

I hope the ATV Quad Squad is going to be out in force this year, since if it doesn't this problem will quickly return to the city.

  • 630 632 State St New Haven, CT 06511, USA - Downtown

When writing SCF post titles, I know that using attention getting titles helps drive up visibility, but I apologize in advance for my inflammatory title, but in this case, I'm seriously concerned that unless a change is implemented soon, someone is going to lose their life.

The issue at question is the redesigned northbound left turn lane on State Street turning onto Grove.

The new signal is now "at eye level" across the street on the traffic island and removed from the other cluster of lights.

THREE TIMES in as many days, I have seen drivers COMPLTELY miss this light, and take a left turn across traffic with the main green light.

I thought that the first time I might just be a fluke, but seeing it again, and again, the most recently being last night and I think that we have a serious problem on our hands.

There are almost zero eye level lights in this city, and this one in particular is a change from the old intersection.

The light is extremely hard to see, and unfamiliar drivers can miss it completely.

This needs to be addressed as quickly as possible. It is only a matter of time that someone takes a left across traffic, and someone barrelling down State Street going south plows in to them.

I'll post pictures, and spend a few minutes today seeing if I can video tape this happening.

    What happened to them?
  • 50 Union Ave New Haven, CT - Hill

The manual sign that is currently up at Union Station is scheduled to be replaced with an electronic station as early as this spring! Speaking for myself, it's one of the joys of visiting the train station, listening to the sign as it changes with new information. It also provides an excellent audio queue that something has changed. The new boards are going to be silent.

Let's see if we can get community involvement going and save this piece of New Haven history!

As much as I love that cat with Old English on his back, graffiti always attracts more graffiti no matter how artful, and now there are many tags on this bridge.

It looks like the cat was made with MARKER, which I'm sure is hard to remove, but it's probably worth going after lest this bridge keep on getting tagged.

  • 374 East St New Haven, CT 06511 - Mill River

On my way home from work yesterday I came across this!

5 off road (2 dirt bikes and 3 quads) barreling down East Street at top speed.
They blew through the light, causing oncoming traffic to screech to a stop as they continued to tear down the street at top speed.

I managed to take a picture as fast as I could.
What can be done about this???

  • I-91 New Haven, CT 06511 - Wooster Square
What is the process for trying to get a sound barrier for this section of I91?
The residents of William, Lyon and Bradley street have long since wanted one. The opposite side of I91 (the franklin street housing area) received a barrier about 2 years ago, which now amplifies the sound on our side.
