Also, having two signs on Chapel Street within close proximity, like on Orange Street and on State Street, would do wonders to reduce speeding and ensure the signs don't get destroyed.

I like the idea previously suggested re: two signs on Chapel St. within close proximity to cut dowm on speeding.

i agree that two signs close together help keep speeds down!
as a cyclist i can tell that on state street and orange st where there are a couple signs close together, drivers are less likely to pass me aggressively (because usually we will end up at the same red light together;)
recently, while biking back from devils gear on this stretch of chapel during rush hour, i was really startled how unnecessarilly hostile some drivers were, despite the tight street with lots of parallel parking.
we don't have the perfect infrastructure, but in the meantime the more in-road pedestrian signs in new haven, the better!

agree == that other corner is a legal XWalk, and should be marked as scuh, with an instreet sign. plus thats where most pedestrians cross -- not at hughes

Considering how short a time it takes for these signs to get utterly destroyed (one in my neighborhood has been obliterated twice since the spring) I'm wondering whether something a bit more burly wouldn't be appropriate. In my hometown the large orange drum type barricades were the norm. Effective and durable. Knock em over and they pick right back up. Picture attached.

Note to the city: based on the website where I "borrowed" the attached image from, these actually cost less than the type currently in use. A "state law" sign can easily be affixed.

The dump trucks are frequently the worst offenders in terms of hitting these things. I have personally seen the sign on Olive Street run over when they exit and turn off of court street. It's a tight corner and instead of moving the sign, they hit it.

I'm thinking this sign is not going to be replaced this year considering we're close to the witching hour where the signs go away for the winter due to snow plow concerns.

i wonder if your barrel idea would be better suited to keeping them in the roads all year long? nice and bright even in snowy conditions. throughout a bunch of cities in the northeast, such as boston, the signs stay in the streets all the time. i hope new haven moves towards that as well.

That's where I got the idea from. I'm from eastern MA where these barrels are ubiquitous at crosswalks in many communities. And yes they remain there year-round.

Several drivers yielded to me (walking) at locations with Xwalk signs today.

There must be a way to keep them around year-round ... I strongly support the orange barrel idea.

Let's figure out how to do it before the signs get taken up for the winter.

The suggestion of using barrels will be addressed within the Dept. to see if this is a viable option to maintain these signs throughout the year. Road width is a factor in maintaining year-round signs as snow begins to pile up along the road edge, parked vehicles, etc. As of this season, the Dept. is slated to remove the in-road signs once winter sets in. Thank you for posting your ideas.

Have you looked into the barrel issue yet?

Was just in Boston and nearby municipalities, which get tons more snow each year than New Haven and have signs up throughout the year - some with barrels, some with no barrels.

We need these in New Haven now,

I believe this is the second time we've had advice that Cyalis will help solve this problem.

I believe the idea is that if you take enough Cyalis, you won't care that the intersection is dangerous.

Barrels will not be used in the City to accomodate year-round use of in-road pedestrian signs. The Department is looking into other options.
