While there seems to be no permanent solution to this issue (and not just in Vallejo), all of your posts to this website and your calls to VPD have somewhat improved things. Yes it gets trying, but just take a few minutes to report every few days, and perhaps it will remain "somewhat improved."
Really? I didn't mean it to be amusing. Personally, I am I getting sick and tired of our city management find ways to throw away money. If you want a laugh, go look at the falling down parking structure, or the derelict building next door to it, where the city evicted the US Post Office! Now those are funny!
Censored again... "Debate on public issues should be uninhibited, robust and wide-open and that...may well include vehement, caustic, and sometimes unpleasantly sharp attacks on government and public officials." - Supreme Court Justice William Brennan
There are no signs stating no overnight parking. The 2 hour parking limit only applies from 7:00am - 6:00pm. We will continue to monitor the situation and move them along if they violate the 2 hour parking limit.
It is not illegal to be homeless, we will continue to enforce any violations that we find.
Christina E, would you help me understand regulations for overnight parking/camping in public lots, private lots, city streets, etc. Examples: along Mare Island Way; in lot at dental office; on street in front of my house; in lot by public boat ramp; Thanks.
Camping overnight in a Public Location is not against the law or any ordinance unless the area is posted no overnight parking. Our Vallejo No Camping Ordinance does not include vehicles. As long as the vehicle is registered or within 6 months of expired registration and moves every 72 hours we can not cite or tow the vehicle, unless it is an RV which is considered over sized, which can be cited for parking an over sized vehicle on a City Street.
The parking lot at the boat launch is a zoned over sized vehicle parking lot, so if an RV is parked in that parking lot it can not be cited for oversize vehicle because they are allowed to park in that lot as long as they pay to park.
Thanks, Christina E. I never knew this. It's an issue that I will follow up with City Council. Definitely too carte blanche, as the trash, human waste, and other "unhealthy" undertakings are the unfortunate fall outs. If there were well-lit monitored, clean, safe public areas for people to park overnight perhaps the blight would be lessened? No solutions here, but Waterfront Park, the face of Vallejo, is filthy.
So now we have it. The Vallejo Police Department's Community Services Section is defending the right of transients to park unlicensed, unroadworthy vehicles, live, sleep, defecate, trade drugs, sell stolen items, and dump trash on our streets against the rights of the law abiding, tax paying citizens.
Gee whiz, if the licenses are only six months expired, and they move from street to street every three days, what right have we to ask for help from our police department?
I think we all need to drive down there at 5pm Friday, park everywhere and block the whole lot, empty our trash, have a pickup truck with a keg of beer in back and party all weekend. Let the Grounds Crew clean up on Monday when we are gone...
Just kidding, no really, we do need to reclaim our waterfront.
I am going to request "no overnight parking/camping" signage. Any advice on where to start? Letters to City Manager and City Council? Next Door support? Other?
