Description
A man somehow got into the Smoothie building at around 6 p.m. on June 5 and attempted to break into two apartments. Both times he was interrupted by resident. Police were called to the scene but the man was nowhere to be found.
The suspect is a tall, lanky, light-skinned African-American man in his 40s or 50s. Bald, no facial hair, wearing a white striped dress shirt and carrying a black bag of tools.

We should have a doorman and security cameras at both entrances- this would serve as a deterrent.

I agree with Greg!

I agree with Greg in that cameras would be a good idea, doormen though would probably just raise the rent. I also would like to add that I think that tenants should be more careful about leaving the door stops down on the inner set of doors. Many times, more often then not, I come home to the building to find the inner door propped open, leaving it vulnerable to anyone walking into the building. I always immediately close the door so that it is secure. Please, if you are going to leave the building for any reason, carry your keys with you instead of putting the door stop down so you can easily get back in. When you do that, you are compromising everyone's safety.

when i moved in here there was a doorman. they got rid of him to cut costs but nevertheless keep raising the rent. i pay more now than i did when i moved in and part of the reason i moved in was because of the doorman. we have a right to a doorman.

I agree with Wendy. It is essential that the inner door be kept locked, that the door is never propped open, and that no one lets in someone else unless they actually know that person to be a building resident. People also prop open the fire excapes. There is a brick by the door towards Chapel Street on the side of the building obviously used for this purpose.

The doorman/concierge has come and gone several times since the building became apartments. There was none when I moved in, then we had a concierge for a while, now we don't again. I guess it's subjective - whatever you were promised when you moved in, etc.
Keeping the doors shut is the first step. I know people were moving in and out this weekend, but the doors were left propped open for long periods in between loads being taken in/out. It's no surprise that someone walked right in.

Please also tell people who prop doors open not to do this. Not everyone knows about the break-ins, since not all residents are on the SATA email list.

How about just fixing the door and the lock? The non Olive Street entrance door is horrible. You can basically yank on the door and get it open. That can't cost that much!

I think we need to do whatever it takes to assure the safety and well-being of all the residents in the building. We were extremely lucky the only thing (not to minimize the severity/importance) that happened was two attempted break-ins. Something could have been stolen, or even worse someone could have been hurt or killed.
Everyone should be more conscientious about keeping the front door closed. We should get more cameras at the two entrances and maybe even on the main floors. We might want to reconsider the locks on the door. It seems like they can be easily popped off with a crowbar.
A doorman/security guard should not be dismissed off-hand just because of the potential cost. It should be discussed and decided upon by all interested parties. If a security guard is chosen, it should be a formidable individual who could definitely do something to defend the building, if necessary.

There should be security 24 hours a day. During the week, LAZ provides security for our parking lot, but also deters building access. This happeened on Saturday evening, a few hours before LAZ patrols the lot at night.
One one exit, someone constantly puts change in the emergency exit latch to prevent the door from locking. it appears closed from out the outside but can easily be pulled open.

I do get frustrated with the rent. Compared to other buildings I'm not exactly sure what we are getting. We have to pay rent, parking and laundry. Most of the fitness equipment is extremely outdated. We finally got laundry machines that work. For the most part I think at the very least people felt safe, but now that gets a jolt.

It is very important to have a doorman and cameras installed. The rent should stay the same. The upper level management should fix the building - we are tenants, not cash cows to milk for money and provide the bare minimum in return.

I agree that we are treated as cash cows and nothing else, and this break-in just made me yet again reevaluate the "value" and satisfaction of living here. Now add lack of safety, and you got yourself a strong desire to move out. Given the fact that the management cannot provide for the safety of the tenants, I think they could be asked for early lease termination should one consider moving out to a safer, and better, place. The building of this size should have 24-hour security and video surveillance. Especially in the area where crimes happen all the time. Keeping the entrance doors closed will NOT give peace of mind after this incident- at least not to me. I would not want to resort to obtaining a gun license and protecting myself and my property - this is not how I ever imagined my living in this city.

Another very important item: the management leaves vacant units unlocked, presumably for easy showings. This means that an unauthorized person can slip into one of them and hide for a while, and come out and strike again. Perhaps this is why the police did not find him. These units MUST BE LOCKED. Please urge PMC to immediately lock all vacant units!!!!!!!!!!

This is an ongoing issue--another unit was broken into today!

And not only was a unit broken into, they found someone sleeping in a closet in the lobby with burglary tools?????? WE NEED more security. I have lived here 3 months and there have been 3 break ins???? I don't feel safe. What is it going to take to get management to keep us secure?

I'm adding an extra lock on the inside of my door. Since PMC property clearly will not step up with safety efforts.

From the NHI: "Between May 30 and June 26, Downtown and Wooster Square were hit by 11 total burglaries. Between June 17 and July 24, that number jumped to 32."

FYI TENNANTS!! I used to live in this building...key word "used" to live here and i left before my lease was up because of the lack of security, amenities and cleanliness. On two different occasions I found neighborhood children in the game room in the courtyard playing. They sneak in all the time somehow. This place is way overpriced for what you get. ALSO>>>i was assaulted right outside on Wall street while walking my dog one night. I found a much nicer, less expensive and safer place in another area of town. GET OUT WHILE YOU STILL HAVE YOUR LIFE!

Nico- did they sue you over early lease termination? I'll be leaving for the same security reasons. They changed one of the front locks (now using 2 keys for 2 building doors!) and hired night-time security for just few nights a week- a pathetic attempt to make it look like "an issue solved" and sell to prospective tenants who wouldn't know any better. Surely will not fly in court.

Nico, I agree that PMC could do a MUCH better job, but are you sure you are thinking of the right building? The Smoothie building is several blocks away from Wall St.
