Description

Does the DPW have any sort of maintenance plan in place for public bike paths? I bike on several of them on a daily basis and have learned that most of them are in very very bad shape. There is brush obscuring them and there is a thick layer of sand all over them making for an extremely dangerous situation. Specifically the end of the Surfside Road path near Nonantum Ave is covered in sand. Also Raceway and Somerset Road bike paths are covered in sand and brush is blocking them. Thank you for any consideration/feedback on this ongoing and dangerous situation.

The bike path sweeper authorized by Town Meeting last April is being ordered, but has not been recieved yet. In the meantime, the paths are attended to as necessary. Are there specific areas of concern?

I listed areas of concern in my above description. Also there is a thick layer of sand on the bike path at the intersection of Scott's Way and Fairgrounds Road.

I understand the DPW is very busy with hundreds of other issues but are there any plans on removing the sand on the Surfside Bike Path? Specifically between Pochick Ave and where the path crosses the Surfside Road headed towards the parking lot at the end. It's a very dangerous situation right now for bike riders.

a street sweeper is overkill - i personally swept madaket bike path after 1 month of neglect and a hurricane, it took a few hours with a push-broom. one person, one hour per week, per path, would be enough to save many thousands in surgery and helicopter bills.

Trees are overhanging at the old south/faregrounds crossing on the old south side. Cyclists have to duck to avoid them.
I don't want to tell anyone how to do their job but one person in one day, could tour all our bike paths and make a list of problems.
A lot of sand was spread on the roads this winter because of the amount of snow we had and a lot of it made it's way to the bike paths.

Not sure if the DPW or a good samaritan did this but the thick layer of sand that has been on the Surfside bike path where it crosses the Surfside Road up near the beach parking lot all summer has been removed. Thank you to whomever removed it. The path is safe once more to bike and walk on.

There is still a thick layer of sand on the bike path at the intersection of Scott's Way and Fairgrounds Road. It's been there all summer. I've pointed this out to the DPW earlier in the summer but it has fallen on deaf ears sadly. Perhaps a good samaritan will take care of the hazard.
