It would be interesting to see the statistics on accidents prior to this change to see if it is really out of the norm. I would think it increases the chances of an accident since the traffic backs up so much at certain periods of the day and with the green turn arrow so short in duration, people will speed or try to turn after turning red to make it. I have seen it and travel this road everyday for the past 4 years. I have also never seen an accident there prior to the red turn arrow.

There is no reason to continue turning left after light has turned red. If you have to speed or run a red light, you are willingly breaking the law. A solution to that would be to extend the timer for longer. This would allow for all turning traffic to continue through without incident.
Also, I work near this intersection, and see accidents on a regular basis.
It is hard to stop all accidents from happening, but by limiting how much of the traffic has to cross the path of oncoming cars by the use of traffic signals, we can help minimize these occurrences.

With the increasing number of vehicles on the road everyday, we have to put in place more cautionary measures to protect the people from there own people. Not obeying traffic laws is not an option, and should be taken very seriously.

I agree breaking the law is not the answer but it is happening and doesn't need to be. The majority of the situations I have seen is that there is no traffic traveling west on Hillsboro street, there is solid red arrow, and the traffic is backing up waiting to turn onto 440 east for no reason. There is no risk of an accident since there is no traffic. Maybe the answer is it should be a solid red during high traffic times and flashing during the low traffic periods. The key reason for traffic lights is to keep traffic flowing safely not to cause additional traffic problems when there is not a safety issue. There are several periods during the day that the traffic is very light on Hillsboro going west at the 440 intersection.

I've referred this to our Public Works Department. I will update this issue when I have heard back from them. Thanks for reporting.

The permissive left turn was removed due to the high volume of accidents of left turning crashes. That is the reason for a protected left turn only signal. Staff will gladly monitor and ensure the left turn time is adequate. The City apologizes for the delay. Thanks for your concern with the safe and efficient movement of traffic.
